Dr. N. Ramesh Aasaan — Founder and Master of Tamil Traditional Martial Arts Education and Research Centre

The Journey

A Life Devoted to the Tradition

Born in rural Tamil Nadu, Dr. N. Ramesh Aasaan encountered the ancient martial arts of his homeland at the age of seven — not in a gymnasium, but in the dust of a village courtyard, under the tutelage of a master who traced his lineage to the Sangam era.

For the next two decades, he trained under three distinct masters of Silambam, Varma Kalai, and Kuttu Varisai — disciplines which, at the time, were each in danger of dying with their last practitioners.

His doctoral research brought academic rigour to what had previously been oral tradition alone — documenting, for the first time in written form, the complete Varma Kalai point system as transmitted through the Kongu Nadu lineage.

“I did not choose to teach. I was chosen — by three masters who placed in my hands the entire weight of their lineages, and said: do not let this die.”

In 1998, with the founding of the Centre, Dr. Aasaan made a commitment: to teach everyone who came with sincerity, regardless of caste, gender, or economic background. The Centre's waiting list has never been empty since.

Today he is recognised by the Tamil Nadu government, several universities, and martial arts bodies across Asia as one of the foremost living authorities on Tamil traditional combat systems.

“The body learns in silence. The warrior speaks only through the form. Every repetition is a prayer to the ancestors who built these movements out of necessity — and a promise to the students who will inherit them.”
